On Saturday July 28, 2018 at Kennedy Park located at 11320 S. Western Avenue Post #986 Don Varnas
participated in a ceremony commemorating the 65th Armistice signing in July 1953 of the Korean War.
Post #986 Don Varnas was selected to be the rifle squad for the ceremony. Members marched in time
along with other American Legion Posts to the Korean War Memorial Monument. After the colors were
raised and ‘Taps’ was played Post #986 Don Varnas performed the rifle salute firing three volleys to
commemorate the Korean War. Many veterans from the Korean War were present as well as Korean
dignitaries and local politicians. All the while many news agencies were recording the wonderful
ceremony. Members of the Post #986 Don Varnas rifle squad in attendance were Commander Glenn
Cekus, Jr. Vice Cdr. Sergio Senese Sr., SAL Commander Sergio Senese Jr. and Adjutant John Brogan.
Other newspapers also included pictures of Post #986 and write-ups on the event including the Beverly
Review, Chicago Tribune and Daily Southtown.
